Downtown Tampa, Florida, is the historical and current heart of Tampa Bay and a defining feature of the Tampa Bay area. It is the completion of a large urban renewal project that began with a grassroots community effort to revitalize its downtown area in the 1980s, led by the Mayor and other local leaders. It remains one of the best examples of urban renewal in Florida and the United States.
The area is often referred to as Tampa's Historic Downtown, including the areas north of downtown and south of the Hillsborough River. It is the central business district of the Tampa Bay Area and the city's core. Not only does downtown Tampa have a lot to offer, but it also hosts the most popular events in the city, such as the Bay Street Fair. The community features a concentration of businesses that includes a mix of national and regional chains, historic buildings, and unique shops.

Tampa Bay History Center has permanent and temporary exhibition galleries that showcase the last 12,000 years of Florida’s history, explorers, and inhabitants. The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts collects and displays modern and historical photography from regionally and internationally known artists. Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park is an urban and sustainable construction that features water features, LED lighting, an open lawn, a pavilion, and a dog run. Fourth Friday is a monthly downtown event that showcases arts and cultural attractions with live music, local food, and more.


Hillsborough County Public Schools is a comprehensive public education system that strives to enable students to be successful and responsible individuals in the community. The district also features an adult technical school, alternative pathways, and charter schools. Downtown Tampa also has several private schools in the area.
